Local Wisdom

"The inlet turns on with moving water—hit it at dawn or dusk. In the bays, drift the edges of channels when the tide is ripping. Wrecks hold fish year-round; tog love cold water and crabs."

40–70+ MILES OUT • CANYON FISHING

Offshore Pelagic Fishing

Ocean City, the "White Marlin Capital of the World," offers world-class canyon fishing in the canyons (Baltimore, Poor Man's, Washington, etc.). Target billfish, tuna, and mahi-mahi with trolling, chunking, and kite fishing techniques. Peak season runs June–October, with summer/fall delivering the hottest action.

White & Blue Marlin

JUNE – OCTOBER PEAK • AUGUST PRIME

White marlin dominate in summer with massive schools; blues appear in warmer Gulf Stream eddies. Troll rigged ballyhoo, skirted lures, or pitch baits at weedlines, temperature breaks (70–78°F), and color changes. Famous White Marlin Open tournament in August draws global attention.

Release most whites; blues trophy potential
Techniques: Trolling 6–9 knots, kite fishing, chunking
Best windows: Dawn/dusk, full/new moon phases • 50–80 miles to canyons

Yellowfin, Bigeye & Bluefin Tuna

JUNE – OCTOBER • JULY–SEPT PEAK

Yellowfin and bigeye thrive over temperature breaks and structure; bluefin often in cooler edges or nearshore in fall. Chunk with butterfish/squid, troll spreader bars/lures, or deep drop jigs. Epic summer/fall bites when water 70°F+; tournaments target 30–100+ lb fish.

Yellowfin/Bigeye 30–100+ lb common
Bluefin fall/winter possible • Chunking/trolling/deep dropping
Watch birds, slicks, and temp breaks • 40–100 miles out

Dolphinfish (Mahi-Mahi)

JUNE – OCTOBER PEAK

Fast-growing, acrobatic fighters around weedlines, floating debris, pot buoys, and color changes. Troll skirted lures, ballyhoo, or cast jigs/plastics. Excellent table fare; often caught while targeting tuna/marlin. Federal waters: 10/person, 54/boat limit.

10–40 lb common • Great light-tackle fun
Techniques: Trolling, casting to debris, pitch baits
Look for sargassum lines & birds diving • Year-round possible, summer best
Offshore Pro Tips

"Run to the canyons on calm days with good SST breaks. Troll at 6–8 knots, watch for birds/weedlines, and be ready to switch to chunking or pitching when you mark fish. Moon phases and tides influence the bite—check conditions here before heading out."
